Hideko Kano Goecker
I am Hideko Kano Goecker and I was born and grew up in Chiba-ken,
Japan, near Tokyo. I received my AA degree from Sacramento City
College in 1973 and my BA degree in Art, with honors, from California
State University Sacramento in 1975.
I studied Japanese ink brush painting (sumi-e) [墨絵] under Master Ito in Tokyo for three years. I studied Chinese ink brush painting under Lillian Seto in Sacramento for nearly ten years.
In Japanese, “sumi” [墨] means ink and “e” [絵] means painting. Sumi-e is an art form that probably originated in China, but it has flourished in Japan for 700 to 800 years. Typically , black ink is used but colored inks may be used and applied by brush. Chinese brush painting utilizes organic colors as well as black ink on “rice paper”. The objective of both styles is to capture the essence of the subject and to omit non-essential details.
I paint in a relaxed and free style and enjoy using subjects such as flowers, fish, birds and insects. I had several one-person shows in Sacramento before moving to Port Angeles with my husband in 1994.
I have exhibited and participated in many juried art shows on the Peninsula and have won numerous awards.
My paintings are in collections throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Japan, Pakistan and Saipan.
